PH and France Sign Defense Cooperation Arrangement

After negotiations for two years between the two ministries of defense, the PH-France arrangement on defense cooperation was signed on May 11 between Secretary of National Defense Voltaire T. Gazmin and France Ambassador to the PH Thierry Mathou. Serving as a framework, the agreement provides for high-level dialogues and defense policy consultations, visits of defense and armed forces authorities, education and training exchanges and cooperation in the fields of defense equipment, logistics and the defense industry as areas of cooperation.

With its conclusion considered as timely given the increasing defense and security challenges both countries are confronted with, the agreement could enhance the two countries’ defense capacities and capabilities essential in addressing such challenges. Cooperation to address various regional security concerns to include HADR, maritime security and counter-terrorism among others is now also possible through the agreement.

Secretary Gazmin and Ambassador Mathou both acknowledged that their respective countries look forward to the initiatives that would be implemented in accordance with the said defense arrangement.
