Vietnam's Defense Minister Visits the Philippines

Secretary of National Defense Voltaire T. Gazmin received General Phung Quang Thanh, Defense Minister of Vietnam, who visited the Philippines on 25-27 August 2013 as official guest of the Department of National Defense.

In their bilateral meeting, General Phung and Secretary Gazmin assessed joint activities of the two defense and military establishments and explored other cooperative initiatives to include a humanitarian assistance and disaster relief cooperation given both countries’ experience on natural disasters. They also exchanged views on regional issues to include the West Philippines Sea/South China Sea and the US Rebalance to the Asia-Pacific.

With a defense cooperation agreement between the Philippines and Vietnam signed in 2010, the relations between the two defense ministries have progressed with high-level visits, personnel exchanges and information-sharing being evident. These exchanges fostered government-to-government links as well as people-to-people ties.

The visit of General Thanh to the Philippines clearly reflects the commitment of sides to enhance the defense relations between the Philippines and Vietnam.
