Secretary Gazmin Keynotes International Day of UN Peacekeepers

Keeping a balance between international commitments and ensuring the safety of peacekeepers is imperative. This was underscored by Secretary Voltaire T. Gazmin in his keynote address during the International Day of United Nations (UN) Peacekeepers.

Held on May 29, 2013 in Camp General Emilio Aguinaldo, Quezon City, the commemorative event recognizes the memory of UN peacekeepers who have lost their lives in the cause of peace and pays tribute to all men and women, who have served and continue to serve UN peacekeeping operations. The celebration also coincides with the 50th anniversary of Philippines’participation in UN peacekeeping operations.

This year’s celebration was highlighted by the conferment of awards to eight and five personnel from the Armed Forces of the Philippines and Philippine National Police respectively in recognition of their outstanding contribution to Philippine peace operations efforts.

The event also showcased the Philippine involvement in various UN peacekeeping missions through a video presentation and a photo exhibit depicting training, deployment and post-deployment activities by Philippine contingents.

Members of the Diplomatic Corps, UN Country team, former members of Philippine contingents and representatives from other agencies graced the occasion.
