Secretary Gazmin Receives Brunei Deputy Defense Minister

In the Philippines to visit Brunei’s contingent in the International Monitoring Team (IMT), YM Dato Paduka Awang Haji Mustappa bin Haji Sirat, Deputy Minister of Defence of Brunei Darussalam, was received by Secretary of National Defense Voltaire T. Gazmin on 01 July 2015.

Secretary Gazmin and Deputy Minister Mustappa exchanged views on the peace process in Mindanao, on improving bilateral defense relations, and on cooperation among Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Member States. Secretary Gazmin and Deputy Minister Haji Mustappa highlighted the importance of sustaining the peace process in Mindanao and discussed the participation of Brunei Darussalam in the Independent Decommissioning Body (IDB) and the International Monitoring Team (IMT). In addition, the Secretary and the Deputy Minister expressed that maintaining stability and security in the Sulu Sea and its surrounding areas is important in maintaining peace and security in the region.

Both Secretary Gazmin and Deputy Minister Haji Mustappa agreed to further strengthen bilateral defense relations and looked forward to convening the next Joint Defense Working Group Committee (JDWC) Meeting soon in Brunei. The Secretary and the Deputy Minister also acknowledged the strong cooperation between the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) and the Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF), marked by visits of high-ranking officers, education and training exchanges and exchange of information.

On multilateral cooperation, the Secretary and the Deputy Minister underlined the importance of establishing a hotline to be used by the ASEAN Member States for crisis situations such as maritime security and natural disasters. Secretary Gazmin and Deputy Minister Haji Mustappa reaffirmed their commitment to enhance defense cooperation in order to promote confidence and mutual understanding and contribute to regional peace and stability.
