PH and US hold 2nd Strategic Dialogue

With a Bilateral Strategic Dialogue between the PH and the US being launched in Manila in January 2011, Washington hosted the 2nd BSD on January 26-27, 2012. The dialogue provided an opportunity for PH and US delegations, led by Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Erlinda Basilio and Defense Undersecretary Pio Lorenzo Batino of the Philippines and US Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell and Acting Assistant Secretary of Defense Peter Lavoy, to exchange views on global and regional engagement, rule of law, economics and trade as well as defense and maritime security issues.

In the dialogue, both sides affirmed their commitment to vision of the Manila Declaration signed in late 2011 (see related story) and deepen cooperation in the areas of security, defense, commerce, law enforcement, human rights and disaster response/relief. With the thrust of prospering both Americans and Filipinos, the importance of deepening bilateral trade and investment ties was emphasized. Efforts of the Philippine government to resolve human rights cases were likewise recognized. The significance of the Mutual Defense Treaty as the basis of PH-US alliance and its continued relevance in the peace, security and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region was likewise reinforced. Both delegations noted the importance of a reinvigorated PH-US alliance, capable of addressing challenges of the 21st century.
