PH and Japan hold Defense Talks

The Philippines’ Department of National Defense held its 5th defense talks with Japan’s Ministry of Defense on 7 March 21012 at the Department of National Defense. The defense talks is a special session of the Political Security Dialogue which the two countries regularly undertake.

The talks which followed the political dialogue held at the Department of Foreign Affairs enabled the Philippines and Japan to share with each other their respective defense policies. It also provided a venue for the Philippines to update Japan on developments in the West Philippine Sea and for Japan to share the lessons it learned from the Great East Japan earthquake. The delegations of the two countries also exchanged views on regional security architecture of the Asia-Pacific.

Both sides agreed to further deepen their existing bilateral defense relations, with the possibility of crafting an agreement on defense cooperation to provide the framework for cooperation on the areas of capacity building, humanitarian assistance and disaster relief and peacekeeping operations. The two partners also recognized the importance of furthering exchanges among their personnel with their respective defense personnel availing of educational opportunities offered by either side. Evident in the meeting was the commitment on both parties to remain committed in sustain their engagements.
